What is Pilates?

Pilates is based off of the 8 Basic Pilates Principles of control, centering, coordination, precision, balance, flow, breath, and concentration. It was designed by a man named Joseph Pilates who was born in Germany in 1880 and emigrated to America in 1926 before World War II to teach his techniques called Contrology which we now call Pilates. The Contrology method is based on bringing whole body health so you have the ability to perform life’s daily activities with joy and ease. Joseph Pilates studied anatomy and movement and designed not only mat workouts from his studies but also designed different types of equipment to help assist the body to move with control and precision in each movement. He believed in “The attainment and maintenance of a uniformly developed body with a sound mind fully capable of naturally, easily, and satisfactorily performing our many and varied daily tasks with spontaneous zest and pleasure.” He also believed you were not defined by your age but how you can move your body in life. The Pilates Technique will help tone and build long lean muscles, improve flexibility, improve articulation of the body, increase the range of motion of the body and joints, and fight muscular imbalances for better balance and health. It also helps develop strong muscles that surround and support the spine and improve circulation, stamina, and coordination. Pilates will also give you awareness and the ability to maintain proper posture through your daily activities in life.
